Description
We are interested in understanding the bacterial factors that promote successful colonization of Streptococcus pneumoniae, a leading cause of disease in people of all ages. This organism spends majority of its life in the polymicrobial environment of the nasopharynx where it is exposed to attack by the host immune system as well as by other inhabiting or invading organisms. We are interested in gaining a better understanding of inter-bacterial interactions and how these interplay with bacterial adaptation. This understanding may help us to better predict the outcome of targeted vaccination and can lead to inventive strategies to treat or prevent pneumococcal infection. {Previously certified gold: November 11, 2016}
