Zero Waste Event Support
The Zero Waste Events Program supports on-campus events that meet zero waste criteria.
Support can include compost service, event assistance (“bin watchers”), compostable serviceware (plates, bowls, utensils, cups, etc.), and technical assistance.
What is a Zero Waste Event?
A zero waste event aims to reduce waste, recycle and compost as much as possible to divert waste from the landfill. Zero waste events are an important contribution to reducing waste on campus. Our assistance is primarily related to composting, but we highly encourage waste reduction and use of reusables as part of your event planning. See how to get started below.
Getting Started
To receive support through the Zero Waste Events (ZWE) Program, you must first complete a short training in person or over Zoom. (See the slides.) Schedule via [email protected]
When working with your caterer, request food items that avoid single-use packaging (ex: bulk chips instead of individual bags, sandwich platters instead of boxed lunches) and request bulk accompaniments (ex: sugar, creamer, ketchup, cream cheese). If possible, get an accurate guest count to prevent over-ordering.
What waste streams will you have at your event? Will you need recycling (bottles, cans) or landfill (plastic-wrapped gluten free muffins, bun bags from caterer) along with compost?
How many guests will you have? Standard bins hold about 30 people’s worth of waste. Event boxes hold about 100 people’s worth of waste.
Receptacles for each of your waste streams should always be located directly next to each other.
Let your guests know that they are involved in a sustainable event! Tell guests all waste is compostable at this event and call out any exceptions.
Do you need compostable cups, plates, utensils, etc? Do you need compost collection boxes and liners? Have questions about your food order or where to throw? Complete our request form on this page or email [email protected].
We recommend having volunteers at your waste stations (compost bins) if your event is over 150 people, outdoors, or in a public area. We can help train your volunteers or can serve as “bin watchers” at your events (limited to our staff availability.)
